Is it okay to "Therapist Shop"?

Writer's picture: Lakeside Professional CounselingLakeside Professional Counseling

Therapists are like shoes.. Sometimes you try a couple out before finding the right fit. Licensed Mental Health Professionals are aware of this and it' important to advocate for yourself if you're not feeling the therapeutic rapport.

Beware of "friend/family-like" feelings with your Therapist. The Therapeutic Bond is an alliance that is unique. You should feel comfortable opening up about your weaknesses as well as your strengths. You should feel supported, respected, and there should also be healthy boundaries that exist. You should also feel confident in your treatment plan.

Many patients feel awkward leaving a therapist for another with out a "good excuse." Don't worry! Professionals don't take this personal. Reach out to the office scheduler and simply request another referral. This is perfectly acceptable and there is no reason to feel uncomfortable. Remember, it's YOUR therapeutic experience, so advocate for yourself to get the most out of it!
